Gollum has continued to follow them, and for a while they come to an uneasy agreement with him and make him their guide into Mordor. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam are making their way toward Mordor so that Frodo can throw the One Ring into Mount Doom. Saruman, formerly a wise wizard whom Gandalf looked up to, is now working with/for Sauron and has sent forth Orcs and men to fight the Riders of Rohan. We meet the Riders of Rohan and then Ents (large tree-like beings), and then we get to the battle of Helm’s Deep. Sadly, Boromir died in the Orc battle, though not without putting up a strong fight. Part 1 (or Book III as it’s called in the book, because each of the 3 novels is divided into 2 books) of The Two Towers begins by following Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas as they try to track Merry and Pippin, who have been taken by Orcs.

Gandalf returned, miraculously, and defeated the evil wizard, Saruman. Merry and Pippin, captured by orcs, escaped into Fangorn Forest and there encountered the Ents. Aragorn, revealed as the hidden heir of the ancient Kings of the West, joined with the Riders of Rohan against the forces of Isengard, and took part in the desperate victory of the Hornburg. The Companions of the Ring have become involved in separate adventures as the quest continues.
